Good case can be made for several


In most any war prior to WWII, most any injury had a good chance of being fatal due to lack of battlefield medical care.

Civil War was fighting against your own country.

Vietnam was fighting for something you probably didn't believe in, in gawdawful conditions. From a morale perspective, hard to get worse than that.

I may give a very slight nod to WWI just because that was the point when the technology of war had outstripped the tactics of war. There were machine guns and aircraft to contend with, but nothing in military history had either the soldiers or commanders prepared to deal with them.
